Are you aspiring to publish a book that captures the imagination and resonates with readers? The journey begins with a compelling and well-structured book proposal. Crafting this document is a critical step that can pave the way for your publishing dreams.
Back in 2011, I invested countless hours into creating a book proposal for my own publication, How To Engineer Your Layoff. After successfully engineering my layoff three months earlier, I envisioned securing a literary agent, landing a book deal, and dedicating the next year to writing. It seemed like the perfect time to pursue a lifelong dream while enjoying the tranquility of Hawaii.
However, the reality of rejection soon set in. I submitted my proposal to around 15 agents, only to receive silence in return. Yet, undeterred and with the support of my family, I decided to self-publish my work. Since launching Financial Samurai in 2009, I had chronicled my journey towards early retirement, sharing the challenges of stepping away from a steady paycheck and connecting with others facing similar struggles.
This community engagement sparked a realization: what if more people could transition away from their jobs with a financial cushion? Severance packages could offer a lifeline, easing the shift into new careers, entrepreneurship, or parenthood. This notion propelled me to publish my book.

Transforming Rejection into Success
One of the driving forces behind my writing is personal experience. Negotiating my severance package gave me the liquid courage to leave a six-figure job that no longer fulfilled me at the age of 34. The impact of that decision transformed my life in ways I couldn't have imagined.
Since then, I have experienced relief from chronic ailments caused by work-related stress, such as lower back pain and TMJ. My personal life flourished as my wife and I welcomed children after years of trying. Most importantly, I reclaimed my creative spirit.
Since its release, How To Engineer Your Layoff has generated over $550,000 in profits, proving that rejection can lead to unexpected success. It’s essential to remember: when the gatekeepers don’t recognize your potential, you have the power to forge your own path.
In the early years, profits hovered around $10,000 annually. However, through ongoing revisions and enhancements, those figures multiplied by five. While it might not seem substantial, earning $50,000 annually from a self-published book is a commendable achievement, especially when it was created from scratch.
The Power of Perseverance: New Opportunities Await
Fast forward to late 2019, and after eight years of writing and perseverance, I secured a book deal with a major publisher, Portfolio Penguin Random House. Interestingly, I didn’t actively seek this opportunity; a cold email outreach led to the offer.
As the pandemic unfolded in early 2020, I embraced the chance to write my next book, Buy This Not That. Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for every rejection I've encountered. They not only make victories sweeter but also serve as motivation to prove doubters wrong.
If you aspire to become a published author, below is my previously rejected book proposal that, in hindsight, had significant merit. I stumbled upon it recently in my Google Drive, and upon rereading, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride.

Content Overview: Crafting a Compelling Narrative
A. Understanding the Premise
According to a study by Manpower Inc, a staggering 44% of employees express dissatisfaction with their jobs. This translates to approximately 61 million Americans feeling unfulfilled at work. The situation is mirrored globally, with countless individuals feeling trapped by financial obligations and mounting debts.
Unless one plans to work indefinitely, there comes a point where the desire to escape the grind becomes overwhelming. My book targets not only disgruntled workers but also anyone contemplating their future beyond the corporate world.
How To Engineer Your Layoff aims to empower readers with the knowledge to negotiate their layoffs strategically, fostering essential relationships and employing specific tactics to secure the best possible outcomes.

The Target Market: Understanding the Audience
A. Market Characteristics
The U.S. workforce, totaling about 138 million, faces significant dissatisfaction, with 44% expressing unhappiness in their jobs. This statistic points to more than 60 million Americans who yearn for greater fulfillment and the ability to strategically navigate their career paths.
This book targets a diverse audience, from disenchanted employees to those contemplating retirement or career changes, providing valuable insights applicable to anyone considering their future.
B. Audience Motivation: The Need for Empowerment
The target demographic comprises individuals lacking the skills or confidence to negotiate their exit from unfulfilling jobs. Many feel trapped in a monotonous routine, as if navigating a corporate maze without an exit strategy.
C. Scalability: A Global Perspective
How To Engineer Your Layoff will be crafted to resonate across cultures and industries. The emotional and tactical aspects of negotiation are universal, transcending geographical boundaries.
Consider the power dynamics at play in various scenarios:
- Will your landlord still raise your rent if you bring them concert tickets?
- Could a small gift influence a Human Resources manager's decision about your employment?
Having lived in six countries and traveled to 30, I possess the ability to connect with diverse audiences, making this book relatable on a global scale.
D. Platform and Affinity Groups: Leveraging Connections
The following platforms are in place to promote the book:
- 150,000+ monthly visitors to FinancialSamurai.com.
- 3,000 Twitter followers on @FinancialSamura.
- Connections with influential personal finance bloggers via the Yakezie Network.
- Potential reach of 750,000 monthly page views through the Yakezie Network.
- Support from the burgeoning early retirement and FIRE community that I helped establish in 2009.
- Engagement with the millions of employees in cyclical industries facing employment uncertainty.
E. Comparable Books: Identifying Gaps in the Market
While many publications focus on job hunting and interview preparation, I have yet to find a book that offers a roadmap for negotiating a severance package. The following titles offer some insight but lack a comprehensive approach:
- How To Get Fired!: The New Employee’s Guide To Perpetual Unemployment by Jeff Havens (2010) - A comedic take that doesn’t provide practical negotiation tools.
- Getting Fired: What to Do if You're Fired, Downsized, Laid Off, Restructured, Discharged, Terminated, or Forced to Resign by Steven Sack (2000) - Outdated advice.
- Fire Me, Please! 101 Ways to Get Fired from Your Miserable Job by David Cordell (2004) - A short, outdated guide with limited insights.
Why My Book Will Stand Out:
1. Real-Time Experience: Having navigated Wall Street for 13 years, I engineered my own layoff and built a net worth of over three million dollars by age 34.
2. A Strong Platform: Financial Samurai and the Yakezie Network provide a unique marketing advantage that other authors lack.
3. Scalable Content: Written with a global perspective, my book will resonate with workers in every corner of the world.
I spent 13 years on Wall Street, rising to Vice President by age 27 and Director by 30, managing a multi-million dollar business for a major investment bank. In 2012, I achieved my dream of independence by successfully engineering my own layoff.
I hold a Magna Cum Laude degree from The College of William & Mary and an MBA from UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business. My diverse upbringing across six countries (Philippines, Zambia, the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, and Malaysia) enables me to connect with a broad audience.
In 2009, I founded Financial Samurai, which has since become a prominent personal finance blog, garnering over 150,000 page views monthly.
B. Personal Marketing Strategies: Building an Audience
- I will leverage my extensive network within the Yakezie Network to promote the book, reaching over 750,000 readers monthly.
- Engagement through speaking opportunities at Fincon 2012, Blog World, and other conferences.
- Creating engaging video content on my site and guest posting on highly-rated blogs.
- Participating in at least 10 podcasts across various genres to widen exposure.
- Reaching out to former clients and colleagues to share insights about the book.
IV. Sample Content: A Glimpse into the Book
Chapter 1: Take Back Your Life
Welcome to the turning point! If you feel trapped in your job, it’s time to reclaim your life. Each day can feel like a burden, especially after facing setbacks like being passed over for a promotion.
Your daily grind shouldn’t feel like a prison sentence, yet millions are caught in this cycle. According to a 2012 study by Right Management, only 11% of employees report satisfaction with their jobs, while 44% express dissatisfaction.
Read this...The American Dream or Nightmare ExploredIn light of rising unemployment rates, consider what matters more: financial stability or personal freedom? If you're reading this, it’s likely you value the latter.
Imagining a Different Path: The Power of Severance Agreements
Picture this: a company offers you $20,000, $50,000, or even $500,000 to not work. Many would jump at the chance, especially if they were contemplating leaving anyway. Now, imagine the opposite scenario, where you must pay to quit your job. This is akin to modern slavery, yet quitting without a severance package can feel just as punitive, stripping you of your income.
Many shy away from negotiating severance agreements, unaware of their rights. Knowing these rights can transform the outcome of your departure.
One acquaintance managed to prolong his employment for two years by understanding his company’s policies. He emerged with a severance package worth double his salary, allowing him to secure his family’s financial future.
Accepting a severance package, no matter the amount, provides a financial cushion for embarking on a new chapter. I, the Financial Samurai, am here to help you turn these possibilities into reality.
Addressing Common Concerns About Negotiating Severance
Throughout my conversations with discontented employees, I often hear excuses regarding the idea of engineering a layoff. The most common reservations include:
- “It feels disingenuous to plan my exit.”
- “I take pride in my work and don’t want to lessen my efforts.”
- “What if I can’t find another job after negotiating my severance?”
These doubts usually stem from a lack of experience in the workforce. The reality is that the job market is unpredictable, and understanding the importance of negotiating a severance is crucial for your future.
One friend was let go just before he could claim retirement benefits. He was a dedicated employee, yet the company chose to cut him instead of others who were less valuable to the organization. This is a reminder of the arbitrary nature of corporate decisions.
Shifting Perspectives: Action Over Inaction
If you resonate with any of the concerns mentioned, it’s time to reflect on your position. Simply thinking about leaving your job without taking action is a form of self-sabotage. There are countless individuals eager to take your place, and denying them that opportunity is neither fair nor beneficial.
In today’s world, loyalty to a company is a rarity. One must prioritize personal well-being, as corporations often do not prioritize employee welfare.
Now that you've engaged in some self-discovery, let’s turn this insight into action!
Gratitude and Reflection
I firmly believe that my book has the potential to liberate countless individuals from unfulfilling jobs, enabling them to pursue more meaningful lives. My journey has shown me that negotiating a severance package is not only possible but can significantly enhance one’s life.
Thank you for considering this proposal. I look forward to paving the way for a transformative experience for many.
Best regards,
Sam
Reflecting on the Proposal: Lessons Learned
Here is my rejected book proposal—a document that is more robust than I initially remembered. I suspect the rejections stemmed from the unconventional nature of negotiating a severance package, despite the clear demand for such guidance among employees looking to transition.
In hindsight, having an established platform is crucial for securing a book deal with a traditional publisher. Given that publishers do not typically market your book, having an audience ready to engage is invaluable. For those with a solid platform, self-publishing presents an attractive alternative, offering greater financial rewards.
Regardless of your path, focus on building your platform and developing your brand. This effort will enhance your chances of receiving interest from literary agents and publishers alike.
